About
Jose Carvalho was born in Portugal in 1981 and moved to London in 2006. He studied ceramics at Sands End and Masbro College. In 2010, he moved to Hammersmith in West London and set up his first studio at home. In March 2016, he opened his first workshop in a Rail Arch in Ravenscourt Park, giving space to establish himself as a full-time potter.
Jose has developed his own glazes, with particular success with volcanic glazes, giving his work organic texture. He also likes to explore colours in his work.
He has taught ceramics for the last two years from his studio and in schools.
In 2017 Jose won two awards – One for Best Use of Surface and Gaze by CR Magazine and Best in Show by Visitor’s choice.
Jose has exhibited his work in various London venues including Hepsibah Gallery. His work has been used in projects by Conran and Partners, Hannah Cork Interiors and Colefax & Fowler. He has been influenced by many potters including Lucie Rie, Adam Buick, Bernard Leach, and Phil Rogers.
Jose is a member of both the Craft Potters Association and London Potters.
